King Prawn Biog

King Prawn built a reputation in the late 90’s as one of the best live bands in the country and leaders in the UK Ska-Punk scene. Combining social commentary with an infectious blend of Ska, Hip Hop, Punk and Ragga, the band have wowed crowds from the Arctic Circle to Sicily, celebrating & representing the diversity of multi-cultural Britain.

Since forming in London in 1993 King Prawn have released four studio albums, seven singles and a live DVD. They were nominated ‘Best new British Band’ in the 1998 Kerrang! Awards and again in 2000 for ‘Spirit of Independence’.

After a successful tour of Japan and performances at Reading & Leeds Festivals in 2003, the band decided to throw the towel in the jaws of success with a final sell out show at London’s Forum. The decision to split at the peak of their popularity left a lasting legacy, prompting many calls for their return.

Following a 10 year hiatus The Prawn returned in 2013 to continue unsettled business. Bassist Babar Luck was replaced by Zac Chang and the line-up expanded to a 7-piece with brass section and keys. Much anticipated shows at Reading & Leeds Festival, Rebellion and headliners at Slam Dunk and Boomtown Fair were their first performances in a decade. The autumn 2013 release of a new single ‘Done Days / A Solemn Man was combined with a 10 date UK club tour, culminating with an emotionally charged London show at Camden Koko.

Since then King Prawn have been writing and recording their 5th album, due to be released later this year. Four years in the making, the much anticipated new album promises to be an epic body of work. They played headliner shows at Bearded Theory and their second appearances at Boomtown Fair in 2015 and Slam Dunk in 2016

During the interim years King Prawn frontman Al Rumjen performed worldwide as vocalist for Asian Dub Foundation. He re-located to Rome, were he lives with his family. Drummer/co-songwriter Nikolai put together his own outfit, The Left Step Band alongside new King Prawn Bassist Zac Chang. Guitarist Devil Hands continued to work in the Music Industry and was involved in recording projects with Richie Glover (Dub War) & Coolie Ranks (The Toasters/The Plifers).
